FORMAT OF THE FORUM

Experts will meet during two days (April 1-2) before the Ministers meet on the last day (April 3).

EXPERTS MEETING

The experts meeting will focus on four critical themes:

  • STI in Action. How can a strengthened STI system promote clean drinking water, renewable energy, effective health care, jobs, and economic development?
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Education and Labor Markets in Africa
  • From Science and Technology (S&T) to Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship to move ideas from the lab to the market
  • Strengthening Scientific Research: A New Deal for African Science. 

MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE

The Ministerial Conference will address two primary issues:

  • Financing Mechanisms and Sectoral Investments for the development of Africa: Challenges and Opportunities for STI in Africa
  • The integration of STI policies at national and sub-regional levels

The Ministerial Conference will be opened by Donald Kaberuka, President of AFDB, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, Jean Ping, Chair of the African Union Commission, the Chair of the African Ministerial Conference for Science and Technology and Abdoulaye Janneh, United Nations Under‐Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and His Excellency Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya (to be confirmed).

CLOSING OF THE FORUM

The conference will end with the Exhibition “Africa on the Move” Results and Award presentation and adoption of the Nairobi Declaration on STI for job creation, human capital development and inclusive growth.

A press conference will be organized at the end of the conference.
